Gibraltar Botanic Garden

I spent a few weeks in Europe in the spring of 2008, and had a chance to visit a few points of botanical interest - some briefly and some in more detail. We spent a few hours in Gibraltar, having walked in across the border from Spain, and we were able to see The Alameda, or Gibraltar Botanic Gardens.

Established in 1816 as a scenic walking gardens in what was basically a fort, the gardens were renovated in 1991 as a Botanic Gardens and to some extent a zoo. They are in a maritime Mediterranean climate and specialize in succulents, especially Aloes.
It is not a large garden, but they have a beautiful hillside location, and many parts of the gardens are relatively mature.
